What is Spent Pot Lining?

Spent pot lining (SPL) is a hazardous waste product that is generated during the aluminum smelting process. It is a mixture of spent cathode and anode lining materials, and it contains a variety of harmful substances, including fluorides, cyanides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

If SPL is not managed properly, it can release these harmful substances into the environment. This can contaminate soil and water, and it can also harm human health. For example, exposure to fluoride can cause dental problems and skeletal fluorosis. Exposure to cyanide can cause poisoning, and exposure to PAHs can increase the risk of cancer.

At Ozoneum, we are committed to helping the aluminum industry manage SPL safely and securely. We offer a variety of services, including:

  • SPL characterization and classification
  • Development of SPL management plans
  • Transportation and delivery of SPL in accordance with all applicable regulations
  • Recycling of SPL

By working with Ozoneum, aluminum smelters can help to protect the environment and human health.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about SPL:

  • SPL is classified as a hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • There are strict regulations governing the transportation and disposal of SPL.

SPL can be recycled into a number of products, including new aluminum pot lining, mineral fuels and construction materials.
